Ahmadu Bello University’s alumni community will return to Zaria this week for its 18th Annual General Assembly, an event organisers say is designed to reconnect graduates and renew their commitment to Nigeria’s development.
The two-day gathering, scheduled for 28 and 29 November, will open with a lecture chaired by Defence Minister Muhammad Badaru Abubakar.
Former Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong is expected to deliver the keynote address on the role of alumni in promoting unity at a time when many Nigerians say the country feels more divided.
Beyond speeches, the assembly aims to bring a personal touch to national conversations. Cultural performances, open-floor interactions and networking sessions have been arranged to allow alumni from different generations and regions to share lived experiences of the university and the country.
Organisers say the event will also focus on revitalising ABU, strengthening alumni networks and exploring how graduates can support education and community development across Nigeria.
The assembly is expected to draw senior figures, including Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani; the Obi of Onitsha and ABU Chancellor, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe; the university’s Pro-Chancellor, Yayale Ahmed; and the Emir of Zazzau, Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli.
The association describes the gathering as both a homecoming and a reaffirmation of shared responsibility to the university and the nation.
