Prof Jacob Agba, delivered the 9th Inaugural Lecture of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS)
Professor Jacob Agba, Cross River State’s first and only Professor of Mass Communication, delivered the 9th Inaugural Lecture of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), reflecting on his journey from adversity to academic prominence.
Titled “From Analogue to Digital Broadcasting: Uncorking the Lacuna in Audience Attention in the Search for Disambiguated Development”, the lecture explored the evolution of broadcasting and the need to address gaps in audience engagement in the digital era.
Prof. Agba, who was visually impaired in his early years, recounted how attending a special school for children with disabilities in Obudu in 1972 shaped both his education and his Christian faith. He described his path as a journey “from darkness to light,” crediting divine intervention for his personal and professional success.
Highlighting the societal role of broadcast media, he stressed the importance of media outlets in informing, educating, and empowering audiences while training future broadcasters. He also paid tribute to his wife, Lady Lydia Agba, for 25 years of support and partnership.
The event, held at UNICROSS’s New Café, was attended by university officials, academics from other institutions, and family members. Prof. Agba’s achievements include seven books, multiple journal articles, and extensive contributions to media scholarship in Nigeria.
