The American University of Nigeria (AUN) has called on students and faculty to engage responsibly with artificial intelligence (AI), warning that the technology should complement, not replace, critical thinking and academic integrity.
Dr Paul Vita, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, delivered the message during a university-wide workshop on November 13, 2025, titled “Introduction to AI and University Writing.” The session brought together students, faculty, and Writing Centre staff to explore ethical and effective ways to integrate AI tools into the learning process.
Dr Vita explained that AI is transforming knowledge creation, enabling the generation of text, images, and ideas, but emphasised that learners must maintain originality and analytical rigour. Drawing a historical parallel, he noted that just as writing once changed human learning, AI could reshape how people think and produce knowledge if used wisely.
He outlined clear guidelines for AUN students, emphasising transparency in AI use, proper citation of AI-generated content, and the necessity of adding personal analysis. AI, he said, should support learning rather than replace it. The University’s policy encourages the use of AI for brainstorming or improving drafts, but prohibits the submission of work that does not reflect the student’s own understanding.
“AI is here to stay,” Dr Vita concluded. “Its impact depends on how we use it—with integrity, purpose, and responsibility.”
