Babcock Clears N17.5bn Debt, New VC Charts Reform Path

Prof. Afolarin Isaac Ojewole, newly inaugurated VC of Babcock University

Babcock University, Ilisan-Remo, Ogun State, has exited the administration of former VC, Prof. Ademola Tayo, completely debt-free after settling an inherited N17.536 billion liability.

In his valedictory address, Tayo hailed the fiscal turnaround as a defining achievement, alongside major academic, digital, and infrastructural reforms implemented over his 10-year tenure.

During Tayo’s administration, internet bandwidth expanded 19-fold, fibre-optic connectivity replaced analogue links, over 70 smart boards were installed, and the university became Nigeria’s first NDPC-certified Data Controller and Processor.

Academic output surged, with publications rising from 392 to 4,717 and citations from 280 to 24,460, while new programmes and schools were established.

Newly inaugurated Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Afolarin Isaac Ojewole, outlined a reform agenda focusing on people-centred leadership, digital transformation, global competitiveness, and the university’s Seventh-day Adventist heritage.

His G.R.A.C.E framework, Globally Relevant, Research-Focused, Adventist-Rooted, Competent Community, and Entrepreneurial, will guide priorities, including automation of finance, registry, HR, and teaching hospital operations, faster result release, and improved international student and faculty engagement.

Ojewole also announced upgraded laboratories, smart classrooms, renewable-energy campus systems, and a N50 million Babcock Innovation & Venture fund to boost research and innovation. Immediate interventions include purchasing a new coaster bus to improve student clinical rotation logistics, signalling a commitment to enhanced student welfare and operational efficiency.
