The House of Representatives has begun work on a bill to establish a Federal University of Education, Science and Technology in Ikere, Ekiti State.
Sponsored by Hon. Ojuawo Rufu Adeniyi, representing Ekiti South West/Ikere/Ise/Orun Federal Constituency, the proposal (HB. 2449) passed its First Reading, marking the first step in the legislative process. If passed, the new federal institution would operate separately from the state-owned Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology (BOUESTI), which was created in 2020 from the former College of Education in Ikere.
Supporters of the bill say the proposed university would expand educational access and boost local development. However, there is a challenge. People are worried about where the government will get the money to fund it. In contrast, some people are concerned that the country already has too many universities that are not being managed effectively. Nevertheless, the bill will now proceed to further readings, public debate, and committee review before lawmakers decide whether it will become law.
