Bingham University, Abuja collaborated with ICIR and dRPC, to hold a sexual harassment awareness event
Bingham University, Abuja, in collaboration with The International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) and the Development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC), held a sexual harassment awareness event on December 10, 2025.
The programme, themed “Empowering Female Students to Challenge Sexual Harassment,” aimed to educate students on how to recognise harassment, available reporting channels, and prevention strategies.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Haruna Ayuba, represented by Dean Desmond Okocha, noted that universities must model ideal conduct and create safe environments.
ICIR’s Dayo Aiyetan and Eunice Enoch noted that harassment can take verbal, physical, or subtle forms, affecting students and staff alike. They stressed the importance of speaking up and trusting one’s instincts.
Confidence Ezeala of Gender Mobile explained the 2024 Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill, which reinforces university policies, defines offences, and imposes penalties of five to 14 years in prison. Bingham’s Gender Office representative, Hope Cole, outlined reporting mechanisms and disciplinary measures for both students and staff.
Students commended the programme for clarifying the different forms of harassment and for equipping them with practical knowledge to respond effectively. The workshop coincided with the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
