The National Association of Political Science Students at Bayero University, Kano, has elected its first female president, Asma’u Hamman Kali, marking a milestone in the association’s history.
Asma’u, a 400-level student of Political Science, emerged and was hailed by both students and faculty as a breakthrough for women in campus politics.
Speaking at the inauguration, Head of Department Professor Abdulmalik Auwal described the election as “a moment of pride and joy,” saying it reflected the students’ confidence in her leadership.
In an interview with BUK Bulletin, Asma’u said her decision to contest was met with scepticism. “It was not an easy decision. Many told me leadership is not an easy place for women,” she said. “But I made it clear to myself that it was not about gender. It was about passion, commitment, and courage to serve.”
She credited her father for inspiring her ambition. “My dad always tells me I can do anything I set my mind to. He is proud to have a daughter who is now a president,” she said.
Her victory has been celebrated across the department, with many female students describing it as a signal of growing confidence in women’s leadership.
