Chrisland University inducts Nigeria’s first-ever Doctors of Physiotherapy
Chrisland University, Abeokuta, has marked a milestone in Nigerian health‑sciences education by graduating the nation’s first cohort under the new Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT) programme. The induction took place on October 25 2025, alongside ceremonies for Medical Laboratory Science and Nursing Science.
The six-year DPT programme, approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2025, upgraded physiotherapy education from the previous bachelor’s degree framework to align with international standards. While Nigeria has long produced practising physiotherapists under the Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) qualification, Chrisland’s graduates are among the first to complete the enhanced DPT curriculum, which includes extended clinical training and advanced rehabilitation science.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oyedunni Sola Arulogun, described the induction as “a historic step for professional training in Nigeria, reflecting our commitment to rigorous, globally benchmarked health education.”
Representatives from the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board of Nigeria, the Medical Laboratory Science Council, and the Nursing and Midwifery Council attended the ceremonies. Deans of the Faculties of Basic Medical Sciences and Nursing highlighted the integrated approach, emphasising competence, ethical practice, and community impact across all health programmes.
The DPT programme positions Chrisland University at the forefront of rehabilitative care in Nigeria, producing graduates equipped to meet the growing national demand for physiotherapy services.
