The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has announced that its 33rd Assembly will focus on improving professional standards and solving engineering challenges.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, COREN President Prof. Sadiq Abubakar stated that the event will bring together over five million engineers and address issues such as fair pay, safety, and preventing building collapses. He explained that attendance is compulsory for registered engineers, as it is linked to renewing their licenses. This, he said, will help reduce the number of unqualified people practising engineering.
COREN also plans to accredit technical colleges, restart industrial training under a new name—Engineering Residency Programme—and train engineers in forensic investigation of failed structures. The council wants support from the National Assembly to amend existing laws and secure better funding.
Abubakar urged the government to support COREN in fulfilling its mandate to improve engineering and infrastructure across Nigeria.
