A professor from Covenant University, Akan Williams, has called on the Nigerian government to control the use of antibiotics in farming to protect public health. Speaking at the university’s 34th Inaugural Lecture in Ota, Ogun State, Williams warned that some poultry farmers secretly add antibiotics to animal feed.
This is because some farmers do not wait long enough after treating birds with antibiotics before selling them. As a result, these drug chemicals remain in the meat that consumers eat. Recent tests on both local and imported meat showed high levels of antibiotics, which can cause serious health problems for people who eat them.
Williams urged the government to establish strict rules and enhance border checks to prevent illegal meat imports. He also called for public education to teach farmers and feed makers about the dangers of misusing antibiotics. University leaders emphasised that Nigeria must prioritise a clean environment and strong leadership for a better future.
