In a season of renewed hope for higher education, the Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, has recorded a significant milestone that is already stirring excitement among students, parents and staff. The institution has secured full accreditation for 43 academic programmes, including the very competitive Nursing Sciences. This development, many say, is coming at a time when public confidence in Nigerian universities is in dire need of revival.
The National Universities Commission (NUC) confirmed the approval after a rigorous assessment of the university’s facilities, curriculum, and staffing between October and November 2024. The official NUC communication, signed by the Acting Director of Accreditation, Mr Abraham Chundusu, announced the full accreditation of 42 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across several faculties.
Some of the undergraduate programmes that scaled through include Law, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Geology, Psychology, and a wide range of education courses such as Building and Woodwork Technology, Christian Religious Studies, Electrical Technology Education, and Metal and Auto Mechanic Technology Education. Language and arts programmes like Arabic Studies, Islamic Studies, and Philosophy were also fully cleared.
In a bid to strengthen professional training, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) separately approved full accreditation for EKSU’s Nursing Sciences programme. The letter, signed by the Council’s Registrar and CEO, Dr Faruk Abubakar, and dated May 20, 2024, also granted the university permission to admit 100 nursing students annually—double the previous figure. Many parents describe this as “good news,” especially as nursing remains one of the most sought-after courses in the country.
Postgraduate programmes were not left out. Courses such as M.Sc. Banking and Finance, MBA, M.Sc. Business Administration, Master of Personnel Management, and Master of Public Administration all received full accreditation, giving postgraduate students renewed confidence in the institution’s academic standing.
Speaking on the achievement, EKSU’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Edward Olanipekun, expressed deep satisfaction. He attributed the success to the tireless commitment of the university’s academic and administrative staff. According to him, the accreditation victory did not happen by chance but through teamwork and unwavering dedication.
He also acknowledged the support of the Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, the institution’s Chancellor, Dr Tunji Olowolafe, and Pro-Chancellor, Professor Akin Oyebode, saying their contributions played a major role in lifting the university’s academic profile.
For many stakeholders, the fresh wave of accreditation marks a new chapter for EKSU, one that promises stronger learning, better facilities, and renewed pride for Ekiti State.
