At the Projects Development Institute (PRODA) in Enugu, researchers showcase semi-automated machines designed to process local crops more quickly and efficiently. Nevertheless, outside the laboratory, many Nigerian farmers say the promise of technology feels distant.
“I have heard about these machines for years,” says Mr Chukwudi Nwosu, a cassava farmer in Enugu State. “But they are not in our villages. We still grind and peel manually. It is hard to see how research here helps us directly.”
During a recent visit to the institute, Board Chairman Hon. Donatus Agu praised the staff’s innovations and stressed alignment with the government’s industrial goals. Director-General Dr Peter Ogbobe outlined upgrades to staff training, fibre-optic connectivity, and mechanised lines.
However, for farmers like Nwosu and small agro-processors, PRODA’s inventions often remain inaccessible due to high costs, distribution gaps, and a lack of outreach. “The ideas are good,” Nwosu says, “but until they reach our hands, it is just science on display.”
PRODA faces a familiar challenge: bridging the gap between research excellence and real-world impact. For Nigerians who rely on agriculture for survival, the question remains whether cutting-edge machines can truly transform livelihoods — or remain confined to workshops.
