The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to repositioning education as a key driver of economic growth.
Prof Suwaiba Said Ahmad, Minister of State for Education, made the assurance at the 2025 general meeting of Federal Unity College principals in Lagos. She emphasised that quality education is essential for national development, economic empowerment, and equitable access, particularly for girls and individuals with special needs.
Ahmad highlighted reforms focusing on curriculum development, teacher professionalisation, and digital transformation, aimed at aligning Nigeria’s education system with global standards and preparing students for a knowledge-driven economy. She urged principals to uphold discipline, integrity, and accountability in their schools.
Permanent Secretary Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan outlined the “Light load, stronger minds” curriculum reform, which reduces subject overload while emphasising core competencies, practical skills, vocational training, and digital pathways.
The ministry will continue to provide policy guidance, technical support, and coordination with development partners to ensure the effective implementation of its initiatives.
The Chairman of FUC Principals, Shehu Dahiru, described the theme as a call to action for principals to nurture responsible, skilled, and visionary young Nigerians.
Dr Iyela Ajayi of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission noted that despite increased budget allocations, funding remains below UNESCO’s recommended 15-25% of total national budgets.
