From a once modest state university in Ojo to one of Africa’s most promising centres of learning, Lagos State University (LASU) has truly come a long way. Its latest pride — the Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Library Complex — now stands tall as the biggest university library in West Africa and a clear symbol of how far the institution has grown.
The library, which was recently commissioned, is not just a building of glass and steel; it is a story of transformation. It is a blend of the old and the new. Moreover, it combines traditional reading spaces with digital technology, e-learning tools, and innovation hubs. Students can now access global online resources, conduct research, and work on creative projects all in one place.
While commissioning the library, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described it as a “celebration of an idea — that learning transforms destinies.” He added that the complex is proof that Lagos State will keep investing in education because “it is the trained mind that conceives invention, builds bridges, heals wounds, writes history, and redefines tomorrow.”
This transformation did not happen overnight. About ten years ago, the Lagos State Government began repositioning LASU with a series of new structures — a central library, senate building, radio station, lecture theatres, and more. Those early efforts laid the foundation for what the university has become today — a true citadel of excellence.
Under successive administrations, LASU has embraced a new vision that puts education and technology at the heart of development. Through projects like EkoDigital, the LASU Technology Hub, and now the Sanwo-Olu Library, the government is building an ecosystem where young people can think, create, and innovate.
The new library, with its digital research labs, archives, and reading lounges, gives students access to both books and global knowledge platforms. It is a place where the next generation of Lagos thinkers, writers, and inventors can begin their journey.
As Sanwo-Olu put it, “This is not the library of old. This is a library for the future, where printed words meet digital possibilities. It is a place where heritage blends with innovation, and where silence becomes the loudest sound of progress in Lagos State.” LASU’s story is now one of hope, growth, and global recognition—proof of what is possible under exemplary political leadership.
