Staff of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), have begun receiving cheques under the Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund (TISSF), a federal government loan scheme designed to enhance welfare and boost productivity.
The formal presentation took place on Wednesday at FUTA’s Council Chamber, with Education Minister Dr Tunji Alausa highlighting the initiative as “the fulfilment of a promise” under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. The zero-interest loans, capped at one-third of a staff member’s annual salary, can be used for housing, healthcare, transportation, and small business development.
Dr Alausa urged recipients to repay the loans promptly, stressing that timely repayments will allow other staff across Nigeria to benefit from the fund.
Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmad, described the day as historic, while FUTA Vice-Chancellor Professor Adenike Oladiji thanked the federal government for prioritising staff welfare.
The scheme, which has been in place since its announcement, now directly benefits FUTA’s academic and non-academic personnel, reinforcing efforts to motivate and retain a skilled workforce in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
