Georgia Tech, UGA Unite for Health Innovation

Despite their fierce athletic rivalry, Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia (UGA) are joining forces to advance healthcare research across the state.


Through partnerships such as the Georgia Clinical and Translational Science Alliance (Georgia CTSA) and the NSF-funded Engineering Research Centre for Cell Manufacturing Technologies (CMaT), both universities tackle critical health challenges collaboratively.


Joint projects range from developing synthetic biomaterials that deliver antimicrobials for bone repair to scaling production of cell-derived vesicles for regenerative medicine. Researchers are also engineering T cells to fight cancer, with real-time monitoring technologies enabling more effective, personalised therapies.


Beyond therapeutics, the Georgia Health Landscape Dashboard connects local health data with researchers to address community-specific challenges, such as diabetes. Another NIH-supported initiative explores wearable technologies to improve maternal care during childbirth, combining clinical insights, consumer science, and large-scale data collection.


“Each school brings unique expertise that, when pooled, accelerates innovation and improves lives,” said UGA’s Courtney Warmath. Tim Lieuwen of Georgia Tech added, “These collaborations show that partnership — not rivalry — is Georgia’s most powerful tradition.”


Together, these efforts not only advance science and healthcare but also train Georgia’s next generation of skilled researchers and clinicians.
