Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, is facing heavy criticism after threatening to ban Labour Party’s Peter Obi from visiting the state without security clearance. His remarks followed Obi’s July 7 visit to Benin, where he donated ₦15 million to a hospital project.
The backlash intensified when a 2008 WAEC result surfaced online, allegedly showing that the governor had failed five out of six subjects, including English and Government. Social media users mocked him, calling him “The Olodo of Edo.” Another viral document, a 2024 adult education enrolment form, shows the governor reportedly registering to retake basic subjects in Abuja.
Nigerians across different sectors, including civic groups, lawyers, and politicians, described the governor’s behaviour as reckless and shameful. They have called on him to focus on improving the poor state of education in Edo State rather than attacking respected national figures.
