Recently in Abuja, Miva Open University welcomed over 8,000 new students in its biggest intake
For many thousands of young Nigerians, getting a university admission is an uphill task. Every year, millions of students write exams like JAMB, but only a few hundred thousand can secure a place. Many talented youths are left out, their dreams put on hold. That is where Miva Open University is making a difference.
In Abuja recently, the university welcomed over 8,000 new students in its biggest intake since starting in 2023. Chancellor Sim Shagaya said it was a proud moment. “We are opening doors for students who might have had no chance before,” he said. Today, the university has more than 18,000 students, and the number is still growing.
Miva is not a typical university. It is digital-first, but it also plans to open 770 study centres across Nigeria, one in every local government. These centres will give students a place to study together, meet their professors, and take part in group projects. It is learning designed to be flexible and close to the people.
Technology is at the heart of Miva’s approach. The university has introduced MIND, an AI-powered learning companion that engages students, provides instant feedback, and helps them think critically. “AI can help students from anywhere understand their lessons better,” Shagaya explained.
The university also brings practical experience into learning. With “professors of practice”, industry experts who teach real-world skills, students get knowledge that goes beyond textbooks. Former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola, who gave the keynote speech, reminded the students that education is not just about exams. “Discipline, character, and focus are just as important,” he said.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Tayo Arulogun said the university’s growth shows that people believe in its mission. Miva Open University, which began with a few students in 2023, now offers 14 undergraduate and four postgraduate programmes, combining quality with accessibility.
For students like Chinedu, a young man from a remote village in Enugu State, Miva is more than a school; it is a chance to build a future. “Before Miva, university education felt like a lost dream. I finally feel like I can study and grow without moving far from home,” he said.
With its blend of technology, flexibility, and real-world learning, Miva Open University is showing that higher education in Africa need not be out of reach. It is turning dreams into degrees and giving thousands of young Nigerians a shot at a brighter future.
