ICAN President, Haruna Yahaya
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has called for a comprehensive review of accounting education and practice in the country to align with global standards and technological advancement.
ICAN President, Haruna Yahaya, represented by Etofolam Osuji, made the call at the Institute’s 2025 Public Lecture held at the University of Lagos. He said the profession must adapt to digital disruption, stressing the need to modernise curricula, close skill gaps, and uphold ethical values.
“The accounting profession is in a dynamic era driven by technology. We must equip future professionals with advanced skills and ethical grounding to shape this new environment,” Yahaya said.
He added that ICAN had introduced research and PhD grants worth ₦2.5 million and ₦500,000, respectively, to promote innovation and thought leadership.
Guest lecturer Dr Olusegun Vincent of Pan-Atlantic University said that automation, artificial intelligence, and blockchain are redefining accounting practices, urging universities to train students in data analytics, cybersecurity, and digital systems.
He also called for stronger collaboration between academia and industry through the engagement of adjunct lecturers with practical field experience.
