The Katsina State Government, with support from UNICEF, has taken 4,000 girls who were not in school and helped them return to the classroom.
Umar Nata’ala, a top official from the Department of Girl-Child Education, shared this at a meeting on improving education in the state. He said over 6,000 girls were also trained in reading, writing, life skills, and handwork. Additionally, 400 Islamic school owners were trained on how to protect children and keep them safe at school.
The Special Adviser to Governor Dikko Radda on Girl-Child Education, Jamila Abdu-Mani, stated that the programme is helping the state address its educational issues. She explained that the government now has data showing that over 148,000 girls and Almajiri children are out of school, which will help them plan better.
UNICEF’s Child Protection Officer, Rahila Manasseh, said they have started setting up centres in various areas where teenage girls can acquire new skills, receive guidance, and continue their education.
Community leaders and local government officials have pledged their support for the project, stating that it will empower girls and provide them with a quality education.
