Institute raise concerns over the escalating unemployment rate among recent NYSC graduates
The Institute for Humanitarian and Disaster Management in Katsina has raised concerns over the escalating unemployment rate among recent NYSC graduates.
Speaking to corps members at the Katsina orientation camp, Registrar Ephraim Aiyada said many fresh graduates struggle because they lack work experience or professional certifications, which employers now consider essential.
He noted that most applications are screened out within seconds once recruiters find no relevant experience or skills.
Aiyada stressed that professional training can bridge this gap and significantly improve employability. He cited a 2018 case where a first-class graduate lost a job opportunity to a second-class applicant with three professional certifications, underscoring the growing importance of practical skills.
He commended NYSC for initiatives like SAED and its collaboration with professional bodies to equip corps members with certifications. He added that the Institute for Humanitarian and Disaster Management and the Institute for Global Peace and Conflict Management offer more than 20 professional courses, including PGD programmes and membership licenses, at subsidised rates for corps members.
The event also featured the recognition of two NYSC officials, Camp PRO Alex Obeamta and Muhammad Bakori, for their outstanding commitment to the welfare and development of corps members.
