Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, Lagos State Deputy Governor, has emphasised the crucial role of alumni in advancing Nigerian universities, urging institutions to strengthen engagement with former students.
He made the remarks on Wednesday while receiving a delegation from the University of Ibadan’s Faculty of Technology, led by Dean Professor Isaac Bamgboye, at the Roundhouse, Alausa, Ikeja.
Hamzat noted that universities worldwide thrive on alumni contributions and called for structured platforms to channel such support effectively. “We must create avenues that allow alumni to contribute in a more organised way to the development of our universities,” he said, citing his own investments in a computer laboratory for his primary and secondary schools as examples of impactful alumni involvement.
He stressed that a coordinated alumni framework would enable graduates to support tertiary institutions, strengthen infrastructure, and enhance academic standards across Nigeria.
Professor Bamgboye highlighted the Faculty’s upcoming 50th anniversary and the focus on alumni contributions, noting that their support has been pivotal in developing faculty facilities.
He commended the Deputy Governor for his personal contributions, saying students have significantly benefited from the technology made available through these collaborative efforts.
The Deputy Governor called for sustained alumni engagement to ensure long-term growth and quality education in Nigeria’s higher institutions.
