The Lagos New Emerald Lions Club, District 404B2, Nigeria, has donated school bags, books, and learning materials to pupils of Ikosi Nursery and Primary School, Ketu, Lagos, in celebration of International Literacy Day.
The initiative, held on Friday in partnership with the Lagos British Lions Club and Lagos Indiana Lions Club, transformed the school premises into a scene of excitement as pupils lined up to receive the donations. Head teacher Mrs Akin Ojo T. A. said the gesture would encourage school attendance and boost morale.
Lion Kadiri Olaide Bilkis, president of the Lagos New Emerald Lions Club, said the project was aimed at meeting the needs of public school pupils, many of whom carry books in polythene bags. “We visited this school two years ago and promised to return. Today, we are fulfilling that promise,” she said.
The club also outlined plans for further community initiatives, including a Mental Health and Wellbeing Day, a Peace Poster Contest, and visits to vulnerable children’s homes later in the year.
Other teachers urged more interventions from corporate and community organisations, highlighting ongoing infrastructure challenges in classrooms. The Lions Club stated that the initiative aimed to enhance learning, encourage attendance, and support education as a means of reducing poverty.
