Nigerian officials are exploring ways to give young researchers hands-on opportunities in digital technologies as the country seeks to expand its digital workforce.
On the sidelines of the International Conference on Theory and Practice of Electronic Governance, Dr Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, met with Professor Tshilidzi Marwala, Rector of the United Nations University (UNU), to discuss practical steps to support research and skills development in the country.
The discussions focused on establishing a UNU Institute in Nigeria dedicated to Digital Public Infrastructure, as well as additional research hubs in Artificial Intelligence and Digital Skills & Literacy. The aim is to create spaces where students, academics, and innovators can test new technologies, gain expertise, and contribute to national digital projects.
Dr Tijani said he hoped at least one of the initiatives could be launched before the end of his tenure, underlining the government’s intent to foster local talent and create opportunities for Nigerians to work on digital solutions with real-world impact.
