Nigeria has approved ₦4.2bn ($2.8m) for 158 new research projects through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), but concerns remain about whether the investment will yield meaningful results.
The 2024 National Research Fund covers housing, fertiliser development, artificial intelligence and healthcare. The government also announced plans to establish 18 innovation and entrepreneurship centres across the country.
However, Leadership newspaper, in its editorial, warned that much of Nigeria’s publicly funded research has historically stayed on paper, with little benefit to the broader economy. The paper cautioned that without strong links between universities, industry and government, the latest grants risk following the same pattern. Officials insist the programme is aimed at applied research and partnerships, but scepticism lingers about whether the projects will move beyond academic reports.
