Nile University of Nigeria has hosted its 5th Inaugural Lecture, where Prof Abdulhameed Danjuma Mambo, Dean of Environmental Sciences, addressed sustainable building practices in Nigeria.
Titled “Beyond Concepts and Concrete: Pathways for Advancing Sustainable Buildings and Infrastructure in 21st Century Nigeria,” the lecture drew academics, policymakers, industry leaders, and students.
Mambo highlighted Nigeria’s housing deficit of 28 million units and projected population of over 400 million by 2050, noting that 75% of existing buildings fail to meet standards.
He warned that reliance on imported designs and conventional construction methods strains the energy grid and deepens environmental vulnerabilities.
Drawing on research with Loughborough University, UN-Habitat, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, he presented innovations such as palm kernel shell concrete, treated sisal fibre reinforcement, and repurposed plastic materials. He urged a national shift toward sustainable construction to reduce carbon emissions.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dilli Dogo commended the lecturer for translating academic research into actionable strategies aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
He described Mambo’s work as a transformative contribution to Nigeria’s urban and infrastructural development, emphasising the university’s role in fostering scholarship with societal impact.
