The Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), Lagos State Chapter, has called for stronger collaboration among professionals in the construction industry to tackle project abandonment, substandard works, and recurring building collapses.
Speaking ahead of the 34th Lagos Builders’ Conference and Annual General Meeting, Chapter Chairman Thomas Adeoye noted that poor coordination among architects, engineers, builders, and quantity surveyors often leads to inaccurate cost estimates and structural failures.
Adeoye commended government efforts to involve professionals in regulatory oversight but maintained that lasting solutions require consistent collaboration. He also urged research into affordable, locally sourced materials to reduce construction costs and bridge Nigeria’s housing deficit.
Vice Chairman Rasheed Ayoola stated that the conference, themed “Collaboration, Cooperation and Inclusiveness for Successful and Sustainable Building Delivery,” will bring together key stakeholders to discuss sustainable practices.
He attributed most abandoned projects to poor cost planning and exclusion of qualified professionals, warning that such neglect compromises safety and quality.
Ayoola further urged government and financial institutions to expand mortgage access and support developers, emphasising that professional rivalry must give way to synergy for a safer built environment.
