The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has sensitised more than 577,200 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members on the dangers of irregular migration.
Comptroller-General Mrs Kemi Nandap disclosed this during a stakeholders’ sensitisation in Abuja, themed “Evolving Patterns in Smuggling of Migrants: Towards a Coordinated National Response.”
She highlighted that criminal syndicates exploit vulnerable Nigerians seeking better livelihoods, and that addressing the problem requires a coordinated national strategy involving government agencies, international organisations, civil society, and the private sector.
Nandap noted that the 2025 Nationwide Anti-Smuggling Sensitisation Campaign is active across schools, markets, worship centres, and motor parks. Plans are also underway to establish Anti-Smuggling Clubs in schools and within the NYSC Community Development Service structure.
Deputy Comptroller-General Ngozi Odikpo emphasised the human cost of migrant smuggling and urged an inclusive national response, calling on stakeholders to share insights to craft effective policies and strategies.
Participants included representatives from UNODC, the Nigerian Police, the Navy, and the British High Commission. The campaign forms part of broader efforts to strengthen border governance, improve migration management, and protect vulnerable citizens.
