The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a strong warning to Nigerians, especially students and travellers, to avoid misusing their United States visas. This advisory became necessary because the US Government have raised concerns over frequent visa violations by some Nigerian nationals.
In a statement shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) page, the NIS urged all visa holders to follow the purpose stated in their visa applications strictly. Public Relations Officer Akinsola Akinlabi warned that any breach—such as overstaying or working illegally- could lead to deportation, visa cancellation, and permanent ineligibility for future US visas. The agency also cautioned Nigerian students in the US to stay enrolled in active academic programmes, as dropping out or prolonged absence could result in visa revocation. Additionally, the NIS noted that US consular officers are increasing scrutiny of applicants suspected of travelling for childbirth purposes, which could lead to more visa denials.
