The Nigerian University Pension Management Company (NUPEMCO) has launched a nationwide campaign to promote pension awareness and financial literacy among students and staff in universities.
The initiative, held during the 2025 Customer Service Week, featured workshops, stakeholder sessions, and a Huawei-sponsored national essay competition themed “Securing the Future: Why Pensions Matter for Every Nigerian Worker.”
The campaign began at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where experts examined the Contributory Pension Scheme and its impact on Nigerian workers. Over 300 participants, including lecturers, administrators, and retirees, attended the event.
NUPEMCO said the campaign aimed to deepen understanding of pensions as part of career development and long-term financial planning.
The essay competition drew over 800 entries from students across Nigerian universities. Six winners emerged, each representing a geopolitical zone, with top prizes including cash and tablets.
At the closing ceremony held at the University of Lagos, speakers, including Prof Kamal Bello of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and Prof Mukhtar Halliru of Bayero University Kano (BUK), commended NUPEMCO for integrating pension education into the university environment, noting that it would help young Nigerians make informed financial choices.
