NYSC Disowns Fake Pamphlet Advising Corps Members to Pay Ransom

Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, DG, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has warned the public against a pamphlet circulating on social media that allegedly instructs corps members to pay ransom if kidnapped.

In a statement on Thursday, the scheme described the document as fake and not an official publication. The NYSC said a similar document had been presented by a consultant in 2021 but was never adopted.

“The document being circulated is not an official NYSC publication and does not represent the Scheme’s policy regarding staff and corps members’ security; it should be ignored,” the statement said.

The NYSC reassured corps members and the public of its commitment to their safety, noting ongoing collaboration with security agencies to enhance protection.

The reemergence of the pamphlet comes amid heightened security concerns nationwide, including recent abductions in Kwara State, and tensions over international scrutiny of Nigeria’s handling of religious communities.

The scheme urged corps members to remain vigilant and to report any security threats to authorities, emphasising that paying ransom is neither recommended nor endorsed.
