Non-academic staff of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago Iwoye, staged a protest on Tuesday against the management’s cancellation of the two-day work-free policy, which had been approved by the Ogun State Government as a palliative measure.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) led the protest, accusing the university management of defying Governor Dapo Abiodun’s directive aimed at cushioning the effects of fuel subsidy removal.
The protesters, who gathered at the university’s main gate, carried placards demanding compliance with the state government’s decision and condemning what they described as “divide-and-rule tactics” by the management.
NASU Chairman Adebola Odufuwa stated that several letters and two seven-day ultimatums were issued to management, but there was no response. He lamented the rising cost of transportation and alleged intimidation of workers.
JAC Chairman, Dr Adedeji Lamina, called on Governor Abiodun to set up a visitation panel to investigate the institution, citing that it has been over a decade since the last review.
However, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ayodeji Agboola dismissed the allegations as “outright falsehood,” stating that the claims were misleading and would be addressed in detail at a scheduled press briefing.
