Prof. Highlights Ministry’s Shortcomings

Uma Kalu Oke, a Professor of Animal Genetics and Breeding

Uma Kalu Oke, a Professor of Animal Genetics and Breeding, stated that establishing the Federal Ministry of Livestock by President Bola Tinubu has not resolved the country’s animal protein challenges.

Oke expressed this while delivering the 66th Inaugural lecture of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.

While speaking, he added that the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI), Zaria, Kaduna State, should be split, with a research centre established in the South East to develop local animal species.

According to him, “The goals for the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Livestock can only be achieved when there is collaboration between the farmers, the researchers, the university, and the government.

He added, “NAPRI, which is the only animal research institute, should be unbundled to allow the development of other animal species.”
