Bert de Jong, Director, Quantum Systems Accelerator (QSA)
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has renewed funding for the Quantum Systems Accelerator (QSA), led by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in partnership with Sandia National Laboratories, with CU Boulder as a key partner. The centre will receive $125 million over five years, starting with $25 million in the first year.
QSA develops quantum technologies and computing prototypes to enable breakthroughs in materials, chemistry, energy, and biology. The centre bridges national labs, academia, and industry, collaborating with partners such as John Martinis’ Qolab to ensure research translates into real-world applications.
CU Boulder participates through its Q-SEnSE institute, advancing quantum sensing and fundamental physics. The renewed funding strengthens the university’s role in national quantum innovation and workforce development.
Since 2020, QSA has achieved significant progress in trapped ions, neutral atoms, and superconducting qubits, including the first atom-based quantum simulators with over 200 qubits, high-precision quantum devices, and advanced error-correction methods. The centre has generated patents, scientific publications, and startups applying quantum research commercially.
QSA Director Bert de Jong highlighted that the centre’s work ensures U.S. leadership in quantum technologies, advancing discoveries from the experimental stage to practical solutions that address scientific, technological and societal challenges.
This renewal positions QSA and its partners to continue shaping the future of quantum science and its applications across multiple sectors.
