The House of Representatives has ordered the Federal Ministry of Education and WAEC to halt Computer-Based Testing (CBT) for the 2026 examination, directing that the policy only be implemented in 2030.
The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance by Rep. Kelechi Wogu, citing risks of massive student failure, depression and other negative consequences if CBT is prematurely introduced.
The House emphasised the need for adequate preparation, including the recruitment of computer teachers, the construction of computer halls with internet access, the provision of standby generators, and readiness checks in private schools.
Rep. Wogu noted that over 70% of students are in rural areas, lacking functional computers and qualified staff, and emphasised that WAEC candidates take at least nine subjects, unlike JAMB, making the immediate rollout of CBT unrealistic. He warned that rushed implementation could lead to widespread academic failure and social issues.
The House mandated its Committees on Basic Examination Bodies, Digital and IT, Basic Education and Labour to engage stakeholders in the education and technology sectors, and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
