A retired school teacher, Chief Joseph Adewole Gbenga, has announced his intention to run for the Kwara South Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections under the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Gbenga, popularly known as Obanla, hails from Omu-Aran in Irepodun Local Government Area. He retired after 35 years in education, serving as a teacher, head teacher, school supervisor, and member of the State Schools Improvement Team, which develops curricula for primary and junior secondary schools in Kwara.
Speaking to reporters, the 67-year-old said his decision to enter politics was driven by a desire to improve governance. He criticised current leadership, saying democracy requires active participation and effective representation.
Gbenga outlined his priorities, including attracting federal institutions to Kwara South, improving infrastructure, and addressing security challenges such as kidnapping and banditry. He also pledged to lobby for youth employment, skills training, and empowerment initiatives.
Kwara South, composed of seven local government areas, is currently represented in the Senate by Lola Ashiru of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
