Save the Children International has started a new programme in Katsina State to enrol over 29,000 out-of-school children. The project, called “Education Cannot Wait,” is helping children in conflict-affected and poverty-stricken areas access education. The programme supports not just children, but also parents and volunteer teachers. Children are provided with learning materials and hygiene kits that include soap, toothpaste, brushes, and other essentials to encourage them to attend classes.
The District Head of Mashi, Alhaji Kabiru Ibrahim, thanked the group and asked them to continue the programme for at least two more years. Local education officials confirmed that classes have started and volunteer teachers are being trained and paid ₦30,000 monthly. Katsina, like many northern states, has many children who are not in school because of insecurity and poverty. Save the Children says it is committed to helping more children get safe, quality education across the region.
