SGU Highlights Key Prostate Cancer Prevention Tips

St. George’s University Shares Key Tips To Raise Awareness Of Prostate Cancer For Men’s Health Awareness Month

St. George’s University (SGU), Grenada, has issued practical guidelines to help men reduce their prostate cancer risk as Men’s Health Awareness Month continues. Prostate cancer remains one of the most common cancers among men globally and the leading cancer affecting men in sub-Saharan Africa, with cases rising from 77,300 in 2020 to over 103,000.

SGU advises men, particularly those above 40 or with a family history, to undergo early health checks, noting that prostate cancer often develops silently. Screening options include the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test and the Digital Rectal Exam (DRE), both helpful in detecting early abnormalities.

The institution also recommends consistent physical activity, such as brisk walking or swimming, to help maintain a healthy weight and hormone balance. A strong diet strategy is encouraged, featuring fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and reduced processed foods.

SGU further urges men to curb alcohol intake, no more than two units per day, and to stop smoking, as both habits elevate cancer and cardiovascular risks.

The university noted that prevention, awareness, and lifestyle adjustments remain central to reducing prostate cancer incidence across Africa.
