Farmers in Bauchi State have hailed the Savanna Institute for Sustainable Development (SISDev) for introducing an innovative agriculture education programme aimed at improving soil fertility and boosting productivity.
Implemented under the Soil Values Project funded by the International Fertiliser Development Corporation (IFDC), the initiative trains farmers and extension agents on soil health, water conservation, and integrated pest management.
During a demonstration exercise in Ningi, SISDev Project Team Lead, Mr Isiaka Ibrahim, said 50 extension agents and lead farmers had earlier been trained to replicate the lessons across all 20 local government areas. He said the practical sessions equip participants with sustainable farming skills and tools such as soil testing kits and tablets.
Farmers expressed excitement about the training, describing it as transformative. They said the programme taught them organic composting, soil moisture retention, and water-saving techniques that have increased yields and reduced costs. Ibrahim added that the initiative is in line with efforts to promote environmentally friendly farming, enhance food security, and strengthen resilience against climate change.
