British Conservative Minister Kemi Badenoch has recounted the harsh experiences she endured while attending a Nigerian boarding school, likening it to being in a prison. Speaking on LBC Radio’s Tonight with Andrew Marr, the minister of Nigerian heritage reflected on her early schooling, stating that the environment was highly challenging and stifling.
Badenoch, who is a member of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, emphasised the strict and often harsh disciplinary measures she faced. “It was like being in a prison. You had to do everything at the same time as everyone else. Moreover, I did not like that,” she said. She noted that the experience made her appreciate the freedom and individuality that the UK education system offered when she returned. Her comments have raised talks around the discipline-driven model often associated with boarding schools in Nigeria, where many institutions operate under rigorous routines and punitive measures.
