Prof. Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, appointed substantive VC of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA)
Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi has been appointed substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), effective February 10, 2026, for a single, non-renewable five-year term. The announcement was made following the 80th Extraordinary Meeting of the University’s Governing Council.
UNESCO Laureate, Prof. Sir Bashiru Aremu, lauded Fawehinmi’s appointment, describing him as a seasoned scholar, a world-class educator, and a Nigerian academic of high repute.
He prayed for divine guidance, wisdom, and protection for the incoming Vice-Chancellor. He commended the Governing Council for a smooth transition, noting that Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Mathew Adamu will serve until Fawehinmi assumes office.
Aremu highlighted Fawehinmi’s leadership traits and academic excellence, stating that his tenure would steer UNIABUJA toward innovation, academic growth, and enhanced institutional capacity. He expressed confidence that the university community would benefit from fresh perspectives and visionary leadership under the new Vice-Chancellor.
