The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has initiated discussions with the Police Service Commission (PSC) on training police officers and commission staff in forensic and DNA studies to enhance their investigative capabilities in crimes and civil cases.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor of Administration at UNIBEN, Professor Christopher Osubor, led the team to Abuja for the meeting on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Edoba Omoregie (SAN). Professor Osubor explained that forensic and DNA training will enable the police to handle complex investigations better. He said it would support the development of a modern and efficient police force with the right tools to solve tough criminal and civil cases.
The Director of UNIBEN’s Centre for Forensic and DNA Studies, Professor Eddy Ehikhamenor, told the PSC team about the centre’s capacity and the benefits of the training. He said that crime is now more complex, and security officers need training in advanced technologies, such as forensics, to stay ahead of criminals.
The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Hashimu Argungu, warmly welcomed the UNIBEN team. He shared that he had been trained in forensics himself and fully understood the value of such training. DIG Argungu agreed that the use of forensic science and DNA in police work can significantly help both the police and the Commission in handling sensitive and complex criminal matters across Nigeria.
He immediately established a team to collaborate with UNIBEN on implementing the training and preparing a formal agreement (Memorandum of Understanding).
The UNIBEN delegation also included Dr Benedicta Ehanire, Deputy Registrar and Head of Public Relations, and Mr. Lucky Ikhalo, Deputy Registrar at the university’s Abuja Liaison Office.
