Philanthropists Donate Braille Machines, Academic Books to UNIJOS
The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has received two Perkins Braille machines and an extensive collection of academic books, donated by philanthropists Dr Gwom Peter of Heriot-Watt University, Scotland, and Mr Andrew Gani-Ikilama, a member of the Bitrus Gani-Ikilama Fellows.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tanko Ishaya, called on students to rededicate themselves to academic excellence, highlighting the growing support the University receives from alumni and partners both within Nigeria and abroad. He said the donations would enrich learning resources and strengthen the institution’s commitment to inclusive education.
Dr Peter, a UK-based indigene of Plateau State, said he was inspired to donate textbooks, journals, and research materials after learning that the University Library had lost many planning-related books in a past fire. He encouraged other Nigerian scholars in the diaspora to contribute unused academic resources to support future generations.
Mr Gani-Ikilama, presenting the Braille machines in honour of his late father, explained that the gesture was aimed at improving access for visually impaired students, including Paul Joseph Agoru and Elizabeth Adenike Shokayode. He urged Nigerians to support education in any way possible, emphasising that even small contributions can make a positive impact on lives.
The University of Jos said the donations would be fully integrated into the library and learning programmes to enhance teaching, research, and inclusivity.
