Prof. Tanko Ishaya, Vice-Chancellor of UNIJOS
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, has called on students to rededicate themselves to academic excellence while taking advantage of growing support from partners and philanthropists.
His remarks came during the presentation of two Perkins Braille Machines and a collection of academic books, donated by Dr Gwom Peter of Heriot-Watt University, UK, and by Mr Andrew Gani-Ikilama, a member of the Bitrus Gani-Ikilama Fellows.
Ishaya highlighted that such contributions enhance teaching, learning, research, and the overall academic environment, urging students to reciprocate by improving their performance. He also stressed proper maintenance and use of the donated resources, particularly by the University Library.
Dr Gwom Peter explained his donation was inspired by the University’s international reputation and the loss of planning-related books in a past library fire. He encouraged Nigerian scholars in the diaspora to donate unused academic materials.
Mr Gani-Ikilama presented the Braille machines in honour of his late father, Dr Bitrus Gani, emphasising support for visually impaired students who have excelled academically, including Paul Joseph Agoru and Elizabeth Adenike Shokayode.
Both donors called on Nigerians to contribute to educational development, noting that even small gestures can significantly impact learning.
