UNILAG Geosciences Department Takes Academic and Industry Engagement to New Level With Town-Gown Lecture Series 1.0.
The University of Lagos says its Department of Geosciences is stepping up efforts to embed industry exposure into teaching following a three-day technical workshop supported by TotalEnergies.
The Town and Gown Lecture Series, held in late November, brought lecturers, students and nine facilitators from Nigeria and abroad together for detailed sessions on seismic interpretation, reservoir monitoring, geological modelling, clastic sedimentology and the use of machine learning in subsurface exploration.
Faculty Dean Professor O. Asekun described the initiative as a “critical pathway” toward preparing graduates for the energy sector. At the same time, Head of Department Professor L. Adeoti thanked TotalEnergies for funding the engagement and providing access to specialist expertise.
The programme followed a structured, workshop-style format, with each day dedicated to a thematic area. Students who attended said the sessions offered a clearer picture of how classroom theory connects to industry workflow.
The department says the series, now in its first edition, forms part of broader efforts to expand industry-linked learning within the faculty. Officials say plans are underway to sustain similar collaborations to ensure students continue to receive practical exposure to emerging trends in geosciences.
