Virginia Tech has earned a spot on the National Academy of Inventors’ 2024 list of top patent-producing universities, ranking No. 73 worldwide and No. 45 among U.S. institutions.
The annual ranking highlights universities that were granted the most U.S. utility patents in a calendar year, based on data from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Virginia Tech was granted 50 utility patents in 2024, up from 32 in 2023—a sign of growing innovation at the university.
“This ranking highlights the increasing impact of Virginia Tech’s dedication to turning research into real-world innovation,” said Grant Brewer, President of Virginia Tech Intellectual Properties.
The ranked universities will be recognised at the National Academy of Inventors’ annual conference in June.
Research and innovation are key priorities at Virginia Tech and are central to its Global Distinction initiative, which focuses on high-impact research and creative work.
The National Academy of Inventors includes over 260 member institutions around the world.
