The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has called on Nigerians to rise and rebuild the country, stating that the dream of a better Nigeria remains alive. He made this passionate call at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, during the school’s first-ever Distinguished Personality Lecture on Monday, June 25, 2025.
Speaking on the topic “Nigeria of Our Dreams,” Wike told a packed Oduduwa Hall that Nigeria’s problems are not beyond repair. He said that although the country has faced corruption, poor leadership, and setbacks since its independence, there is still hope for a better future if citizens are ready to act.
“The Nigeria we dream of is not dead. It only sleeps. It is waiting for brave and committed Nigerians to wake it up,” he said.
Wike outlined 11 key pillars for rebuilding the country, including strong leadership, quality education, improved infrastructure, and national unity. He praised President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, especially the creation of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
OAU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adebayo Bamire, described Wike as a results-driven leader and urged him to support the university with a legacy project, such as a Centre for Good Governance. The Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Siyan Oyeweso, also praised Wike’s leadership journey, calling him a “great man of the age.” The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, stressed the importance of unity and culture in national development. He said Nigeria can succeed if citizens work together and stay true to their values.
The lecture ended with a loud ovation as Wike reminded everyone: “Nigeria of our dreams will not happen by wishing, but by working.” The event was seen as a call to action for all Nigerians, especially the youth, to believe and build.
