The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 25 students of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), for allegedly being involved in cybercrime. The suspects were picked up on Monday during a sting operation near BUK New Site, following weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering.
EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja. He said the operation was prompted by credible intelligence linking the students to internet fraud and other cybercrime activities. “Items recovered from them include mobile phones, laptops, internet routers and a Honda Accord car,” Oyewale said. The anti-graft agency added that the suspects are undergoing interrogation and would be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded.
The commission warned students nationwide to shun cybercrime and focus on their studies, stressing that its operatives are intensifying crackdowns on criminal networks operating from higher institutions. The EFCC has repeatedly raised concerns about the rising number of undergraduates lured into internet fraud, noting that recent raids in different states have exposed a growing trend of young people being involved in online scams and financial fraud.
