The School of Basic and Remedial Studies (SBRS) of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has organised a career talk for secondary school students in Zaria to help them make better decisions about their future. The event was held on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at Alhudahuda College, Zaria. The Director of SBRS, Dr. Sanusi Gambo, stated that the event was necessary because many students struggle to choose the right career. He said SBRS wanted to give back by inviting professionals to guide students.
Dr. Abubakar Khaleed from the Physics Department at ABU spoke to the students about “New Opportunities for Science Students in Today’s World.” He discussed exciting careers in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), climate change, robotics, cybersecurity, biotechnology, and space science. Dr. Khaleed advised the students to acquire valuable skills, think creatively, and continually improve themselves. He also encouraged them to join school clubs and ask their teachers for help when needed.
Another speaker, Prof. Balarabe Abdullahi, who previously led SBRS, stated that students who attend SBRS have a better chance of gaining admission to ABU. He asked them to consider applying to SBRS and take advantage of the opportunities it provides.
Prof. Sadiq Mohammed, also a former SBRS Director, advised the students to study hard and stay focused. He said SBRS has enough teachers and good labs to help students learn well. Prof. Hassan Zoaka, the head of the SBRS Board, issued a warning that artificial intelligence could potentially replace many jobs within 20 to 30 years. He advised students to choose courses that will remain important in the future.
Other important guests, including traditional rulers and security officers, were also present. They praised SBRS for its efforts in helping young people through education.
