The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, has called on African countries to harness technology to transform their education systems and promote inclusive learning across the continent.
Alausa made the call in Abuja at the opening of the MoodleMoot Africa Conference 2025, organised by the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). The conference, themed “Leveraging the Power of Disruptive Technologies for Africa’s Educational Transformation,” brought together delegates from more than 24 countries.
The minister said Africa must “take charge of its digital destiny” by using technology to empower its people and enhance education delivery. He said open-source platforms such as Moodle offer flexibility, scalability, and cost-effectiveness that could strengthen learning institutions across Africa.
“We stand at a crucial juncture where technology is transforming how we teach and learn,” Alausa said. “Africa must build a vibrant community of developers and users to achieve digital sovereignty over our learning systems and data.”
NOUN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters, described the conference as a movement uniting educators, technologists, and administrators to advance technology-driven education. He said digital tools like Moodle connect learners beyond geographical barriers and promote innovation in teaching.
South Africa’s Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ms Lindi Mminele, commended Nigeria for hosting the event for the first time and lauded its role in promoting cooperation in technology-based education across Africa.
The three-day conference ends on Friday.
